Where is the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame located?
Memorabilia and plaques honoring the inductees to the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame are on public display at Famers restaurant located in the lodge at the Pine Mountain Resort in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Please refer to their website for directions and other information.
Who is eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame?
To be eligible for induction into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame, the individual must be a native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula or have accomplished his or her feats related to athletic sports while residing in the Upper Peninsula. Ten inductees are chosen annually, three of which are deceased or qualify for the pre-1980 category.
Can I nominate a candidate for the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame?
Yes! Any person may nominate a candidate for the Hall of Fame. To be considered for the upcoming year the nomination must be received by June 1. See our Nomination Process for specifics regarding nomination requirements and how to submit your nomination. Note that even if your nominee is not selected the year you submit the nomination, that nomination will remain permanently on file for ongoing consideration. You may add information to the nomination any time.
How does the selection process work?
All of those who have been newly nominated, as well as those who have been nominated in the past, are considered for election into the UPSHF by the 23-member UPSHF Council at its annual meetings. Council members cast their ballots solely on the basis of written nominations. Only rarely is there any discussion about candidates and non-Council members cannot speak at the selection meeting.
What kinds of sports are represented in the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame?
The U.P. Sports Hall of Fame honors individuals who've achieved accomplishments in all types and all facets of athletic sports. We have honored athletes representing high school, college, professional, amateur and Olympic sports. We also honor individuals who have contributed to our sports legacy as coaches, officials, administrators, sportscasters, sportswriters, sports medicine personnel, etc.
