a third-team Division II All-American basketball player at Northern Michigan University, he set a NMU single-season basketball record by playing the most minutes (931) in 27 games.  He became head men's basketball coach at Michigan State University in 1995 and earned NCAA Division I Coach of the Year honors in 1998 and directed the Spartans to the NCAA Championship in 2000.
